A Change in Career a Change in You

For the majority of us that start out in the career path we inevitably end up in a job of some kind or another. I say this because very few people of maturity are in the same jobs they started, why? Because we all have an inbuilt desire to be successful, as time goes by we get more desperate with our results and we move from one job to another, thinking this is the one, this is my career only to end up in another working environment that gradually wanes until we start looking for another job or career.

Some of us are lucky (or unlucky) enough to start our own business, we work all the hours under the sun and moon and think that this is it, this is going to make me, I will be happy and have no worries about bills and the future. Sadly,it's not quite like that. If you're into manual labour you generally end up with no money and all sorts of ailments like back pain, trapped nerves (very painful!) or even the odd limb missing. All from slogging your guts out 24/7! And if you do find that job you always wanted? Are you still there? I'll bet your not or you won't be in the near future. Why? Because you aren't getting the appreciation you feel you deserve, you know you do a good job, and you know you could do it better but something's stopping you, stopping you from progressing and stopping you.

Why is this? Have we been brought up to be like this? For the average person we weren't taught how to look after our bodies or our minds at school, we were doing homework on Arithmetic's, English, French, Geology and Physics to name a few, all good if you knew what you were going to do in life! Society didn't teach us how to make money or be happy or to look after ourselves, it just taught the basics so that we could fit in.

But fitting in doesn't work!.....we all have that built in desire to be successful, to be better than we are, it's only with us for a certain period of time and you know when it's running out, it's inbuilt, we are human and it's natural. You have to take a look at yourself and almost go back to school, your school! Do it the way you want to be taught not how society taught you.
Your school, what is your school?..........It's anything you want it to be!

You just need knowledge, only WITH THIS TIME its knowledge you want to learn and you can get enthralled in. You can work any amount of hours in the day as little or as much as you want, but the big difference is that you will be enthralled with your new venture, you will want to work all the hours life allows (and your family) and the appreciation will come from yourself.

Your life that has passed by (which goes too quick in my book) has gained you a wealth of knowledge that YOU know, that you can pass on to others that need that information. Information that is valuable and easy for you to convey to others, it's called a niche.

So you see, to all those out there with yearn and the willpower (and we all have it, it's natural) you have an opportunity that no society has had before us. The world is a small village, and the reason for that is.......................... the INTERNET.

The Downside of Being a Home Business Entrepreneur

Even as it is hard to believe that there might be an identifiable downside of being a home business entrepreneur, the facts bear out to the overwhelming majority the dream of working from home and running a home business will turn into a nightmare at some point. This is less often the case for those who run a home based business as a sideline or an expansion of a hobby, but very frequently happens when the entrepreneur sees the home business as the sole source of fiscal wellbeing.

While the upside is undeniable (no boss to report to and no long commute) the downside is rather tangible: fail to find the customers or clients and the odds are good that you will not be able to afford food, shelter, and the other basics of life. Doing things your way without having to justify yourself to a third party or being accountable to an employer comes at a steep cost for those who have failed to adequately plan ahead for the lean times.

It is interesting to note that in addition to not having the financial success to sustain your lifestyle and get ahead, you will find other downsides in being the boss. For example, if your basic personality is not one suited for customer service and ambitious getting ahead, you will find that being an entrepreneur is hard work... harder at times than working in an office for a boss you may have disrespected or even despised. As a home business entrepreneur it is solely up to you to find customers, fill their orders, and keep them happy.

Dealing with unreasonable customers requires finesse, and dealing with slow suppliers or manufacturers who let some substandard items get out their doors and to your customers will require not only insistence but calm assertiveness. If you fly off the handle easily and have not mastered the art of negotiation, empathy, and a willingness to hold your tongue no matter what the customer or manufacturer might say, running a home business might suddenly feel like a walk on egg shells.

In some cases (specially when you receive criticisms of items you yourself made) it may make your workday little more than drudgery. Yet getting ahead in business relies heavily on your ability to deal with difficult customers and even those who are downright impossible. At the same time, getting out and finding more clients and customers requires you to put your best foot forward and treat each new prospect as though it were your first call of the day, even if it is the setup for the potentially 40th rejection!

Therefore the general advice is to think long and carefully about the implications of being an entrepreneur. Do you really have what it takes personality wise in addition to the financial resources to sustain yourself and your family for a while until the business conceivably takes off? Are you able to be ambitious yet demure when called upon to swallow your pride and humble when criticizes...perhaps wrongly so?

Three Things NEVER To Do In Business

There are some things you should never do in a home based business if you want to succeed. If you are already a successful business you are well aware of this. If you are a new business entrepreneur then these three tips may be very helpful to you.

The first thing you NEVER want to do is to skimp on advertising. Without proper advertising your business will chance taking a big loss in services or product sales. An example of this is a small business that puts out children’s audio CD’s is introducing a new product. The business is new and practically unknown. They do have a website, and a small advertisement in the local newspaper. Only a small area is going to be aware of this company and it’s CD. A better form of advertisement would have been advertising in several, larger newspapers. Having a billboard advertisement that can be seen in a heavily trafficked area. These may cost more, but you will reach a larger customer base. Without reaching customers, you fail.

Secondly, NEVER let your guard down with your business competition. If your business has a competitive market you want to definitely consider this. An example of this is a video store. You would want to be aware of what the other store offers. Is there a large selection? What are their prices per video per day? Do they offer any specials or discounts? You would want to keep up on both the smaller video stores as well as the larger video store chains in your area. You want to either match what is offered or offer a slightly lower fee. Customers love to save money, even a few dollars and cents.

Lastly, NEVER jump into a business without doing thorough research. You want to be sure you know all of the details about the business you are involved in. You want to know financial details as well as information about your competition. When you take the time to research a specific business you insure success for yourself. You wouldn’t want any surprises popping up when it comes to your business. You want to be able to set yourself up so that your business operates as smoothly as possible.

If you make an effort to follow the above guidelines on what NEVER to do in business then you are on the right track. You create a solid base for business success. Be sure not to jump into any business decisions without research and well thought out planning. Care for your business like you would your children. Give it what it needs to grow and you will be pleased with the end result. Be sure you follow the do’s and NEVER the don’ts and see your business soar.

Budgeting Your Money When You Own A Business

One of the most difficult things to do when you start a new home based business is putting together a budget. Without any financial history on which to base income and expenses, it may seem like guesswork, but as part of any home business plan a tentative budget can be established with some thought and anticipation for the future.

In most other businesses there are two main categories, income and expense. Under your expense category there can be several sub-categories often falling into two main areas of controllable expenses and uncontrollable. While many business owners claim they can control every expense involved in their business, they are simply kidding themselves as some things such as utility cost, the amount of rent and other so-called fixed costs can, and do change, with the owner having no control.

Other expenses such as payroll, insurance and advertising can be subject to a budget, but they are considered controllable expenses. If the business begins to fall off, you can control some of these expenses by laying off employees and cutting back on advertising. However, living by a budget will help maintain profitability in many respects but can also turn against you in the long run.

Depending on the viability of your business it often is a better investment to bite the financial bullet on employee wages and still provide good customer service to the remaining customers until business picks back up. By trying to do everything yourself not only will you burn out quickly, but no one is taking care of the customers, it will not take long until there are no more customers to care for.

There are two ways to budget your business money and that is through set dollar amounts and percentage of income. Many businesses will budget their controllable expenses by the dollar and non-controllable by percentage of income. Obviously a good part of the owner’s time is going to be based on bringing money into the business and how much they have to spend on controllable expenses will be in direct relation to income.

For example, a company earning $20,000 a month in income has budgeted six percent for payroll, providing $1,200 for payroll. If the income level rises to $50,000 the budgeted payroll percent does not change but the dollars available for payroll climbs to $3,000. With an obvious increase in business to create the additional income, the owner will probably need the extra help to take care of business.

There are many other expenses that fall into the payroll account such as worker’s compensation charges, Social Security tax paid by the employer and paid vacation time or other perks determined by the employer. While a budget may be difficult to establish for a new business, it is a necessary evil for all business owners.

Thankfully a new home based business is much easier to start up compared to any kind of high street business. In the early days most of the overheads are minimalised or even zero as a rule, this gives anyone and everbody the added advantage when they start a home based business.
